METAL ETCHING PRIMER
A self-etching primer is used to help the Spectra Chrome Basecoat 812-E stick to metal surfaces. It contains an acid that chemically “bites” into the bare metal to give the best adhesion.
WHERE TO USE:
Bare steel, stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized metal, copper, etc.
PROPERTIES:
Very thin, not buildable, not designed for filling deep grooves or pits. It is mainly a foundation coat for adhesion and corrosion resistance, not a surfacer. Therefore, it is generally not sanded much once applied.
- If the metal surface has light oxidation or rust, remove it by sanding before applying primer. For heavy rust or corrosion, it may be easiest to have the metal parts sandblasted for best results.
Apply the degreaser to a clean towel, wipe the degreaser over a small area of the part, then remove it right away with a clean, second towel. Repeat as necessary until the entire part has been cleaned.
Do not allow the degreaser to dry on the part or streaking could occur.
- Shake the can well, and apply a medium-wet coat of etching primer.
- Allow it to flash dry for approximately 10 minutes.
- Apply a second medium-wet coat of etching primer.
- Allow to dry for 30-45 minutes before basecoating.
- If the part has unwanted pits, scratches, or surface imperfections; sandable primer or filler primer can be applied over the dried etching primer. Always be sure to clean with water-based degreaser after sanding.
NOTE: If you wait longer than 16 hours after application, the etching primer will need to be sanded first before basecoating. Refer to manufacturer’s instructions on the can for additional information.
