SANDING PAINTED SURFACES

Previously painted surfaces must be sanded prior to applying Spectra Chrome. Sanding the painted surface provides a rough texture; increasing the surface area onto which the Spectra Chrome basecoat can adhere. This is a basic surface prep technique for any paint; and it will ensure perfect adhesion of the Spectra Chrome basecoat layer. We will use a “wet sanding” technique, using 600 or 800 grit sandpaper.

Fold the sandpaper into thirds, and wet it with a squirt bottle (filled with tap water). Continue sanding the glossy areas until the entire surface area has been dulled, paying special attention to the edges of the part. Once all areas have been sanded, rinse the part and allow it to dry – making sure no glossy areas still remain. When sanding is complete, rinse the part thoroughly with water and dry it off completely.
