SPRAY EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
The Spectra Chrome finish consists of three layers – basecoat, metal spray, and topcoat. The basecoat and topcoat layers are polyurethane-based paints, which are applied using an HVLP spray gun and a compressed air source.
Many customers already own a compressor and spray gun well suited for this process; however, there are two key criteria to keep in mind:
If you need to purchase an air compressor and spray gun, we recommend Harbor Freight Tools. We have tested each model, and recommend the MCGRAW 8 Gallon, 150 PSI Air Compressor along with the Central Pneumatic 20 oz. HVLP Gravity-Feed Air Spray Gun. This air compressor / spray gun combination is perfectly suitable for applying the Spectra Chrome basecoat and topcoat – providing the minimum cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air required to drive the spray gun.
That being said, it is never a bad idea to go larger. A compressor with a higher CFM rating and bigger tank capacity will be helpful if you plan to spray a lot of parts at one time. Also, if you plan to use an air sander or other pneumatic tools with your compressor, additional CFM will be required.
It is extremely important to filter and remove all moisture from your compressed air source to prevent moisture from building up in the air lines and negatively affecting your finish. The next section will explain how to set up the air filtration system included with your LI System.
